Masjid in Delhi - Tuesday, November 02, 2010 9:51:12 AM

The Chirag-i-Dihli's Dargah is the Dargah of Sufi saint Nasir ud din Mahmud. Nasir ud din Mahmud was one of the favorite disciples of Hazrat Nizamuddin. It is situated in the village of Chiragh Delhi. You can be reached by either taking the Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg through the Chiragh main road or the Outer Ring Road through the Soami Nagar South Colony. It is the burial place and tomb of Sufi saint Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud. Entitled Raushan Chiragh-i-Dihli, which means the 'Illuminated lamp of Delhi', the saint died in the year 1356. He was a disciple of Hazrat Nizam-ud-Din and also succeeded him to become the head of the Chishti sect. Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud was a mystic as well as a poet.

Initially, you will find the main tomb was enclosed within rectangular walls, built of rubble. This chamber was constructed by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq, who later added a small gateway on both sides of the tomb. There are 12 pillars to support the chamber. Each corner of the dome of the Tomb has Turrets. This dome bears a lot of resemblance to the tomb of Mubarak Shah. Like his tomb, this tomb is plastered and rises from an octagonal drum.
Apart from this there are several structures inside the complex of the Chirag-i-Dihli's Dargah. They were added at different points of time. This includes an assembly hall (Majlis Khana), a symposium hall (Mahfil Khana) and several mosques. One of these mosques was built by Emperor Farrukhsiyar in the early eighteenth century to offer his respect to Nasir ud din Mahmud.
