India for the first time is the global host of UN Environment Day this year

June 5, is observed as World Environment Day which has been in existence since, 1973. This day is hosted every year by a different nation with a different theme and is  commemorated with an international exposition. World Environment Day celebrates its 11th anniversary on June 5, 2011 with the theme being; Forests: Nature at Your Service.

World Environment Day is an annual event which is observed across the globe in the form of campaigns, workshops, seminar and events. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for the first time, has named India as the global host of World Environment Day, 2011.

India's two most prominent cities - Mumbai and Delhi will be the venue for this year's global celebration of the environment.

Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra and Rahul Bose have drawn the battlelines to spread awareness about initiatives that people can take to green the planet.

  • In the run up to June 5, the environment ministry has also planned a group of activities, including 'Green Walkathon', in partnership with Delhi government at India Gate.
  • The other significant feature will be organization og 'Green Haat', involving about 52 partners to showcase initatives of forest dwellers, minor forest produce federation of various states, women self help groups, NGO partners, highlighting the value added forest produts at Dilli Haat.
