A complete tourist place, National Rail Museum is the focus of Rail Heritage of India a source of fascination and interest in Railways for all. National Rail Museum is situated on the Shanti Path in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Tourists will find that there are various models of train, engines and coaches in the museum. It also preserves the model of India's very first train, a steam engine that made its journey from Mumbai to Thane in 1853. Once you get inside the locomotives are show cased in the open and hence, one gets a feeling as if one is walking into a garden full of railways.
The museum, extends across 10 acres of land, is a storehouse of information on the 150-yr old history of railways in India. Children love the ride in the toy train on the miniature rail track around the museum. The highlight of the museum is the Fairy Queen built in 1855, which is the best-preserved locomotive of its times. One-of-its’s-kind museum in Asia has an interesting collection of history, heritage, romance, nostalgia, fun, leisure and entertainment, all
at one place.
The vintage section of the museum consists of the world's oldest locomotive in a working condition, Viceregal Dining Car (1889) and the Prince of Wales Saloon (1875), Maharaja of Mysore's Saloon (1899), Maharaja of Baroda's Saloon (1886) and so on. At last the Fairy Queen (1855); said to be the best-preserved steam locomotive engines of its age.
The Museum ensures to take the visitors on an exciting journey into the Railway history and heritage and depict their contribution to the industrial and economic progress of the country.
