Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi is the first of the grand dynastic mausoleums that were to become synonyms of Mughal architecture with the architectural style.Humayun’s Tomb was built in the 1560’s, with the patronage of Humayun’s son, the great Emperor Akbar. Humayun’s garden-tomb is also called the ‘dormitory of the Mughals’ as in the cells are buried over 150 Mughal family members.After a century from its construction Humayun’s tomb inspired the construction of the more famous Taj Mahal.

Construction:
Akbar visited the tomb in 1571, when it was about to be completed. The tomb of Humayun was built to the initiative of his widow Hamida Banu Begum for her deceased husband in 1565. Construction began in 1565 and it was completed in 1572 as it cost 1.5 million rupees, paid entirely by the Empress.

Structure and shape:
In the Humayun's Tomb one can see architectural features which over time went on to become important component of Mughal architecture, such as its octagonal shape and its high central arch.

Importance:
Humayun's Tomb, Delhi was built in 1570, is of particular cultural significance as it was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent and the symbol of the powerful Mughal dynasty. It also inspired several major architectural innovations as culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal.
