New Delhi will soon have research and development centers focusing on five sporting disciplines.
The Dhyan Chand stadium (hockey), JN stadium (football and athletics), Talkatora ( swimming), Indira Gandhi stadium ( gymnastics) will house these institutes, which will gather information on how these sports are run in other countries, their training methods, the equipment and other support systems. It will also suggest ways to adapt them to Indian conditions.
The new strategies will be tested in national camps, according to SAI director general DD Verma. An ambitious project by any yardstick, Verma feels India ought to have taken this step a while back.
"The concepts are ready for all the five disciplines. But we are starting with hockey. Funds are not an issue. We will appoint foreign professionals in specialized fields such as physiology and recovery and develop these centers through them," he said.
