DMOZ Directory Submission for Link Building

Useful Websites - Monday, February 21, 2011 5:57:39 AM

The Open Directory Project (ODP), also known as Dmoz is a multilingual open content directory of World Wide Web links. It is owned by Netscape but it is constructed and maintained by a community of volunteer editors. I hear people asking the question whether DMOZ directory submission is a must or important for a link building campaign. Lot of people also complain that they submit to DMOZ but never hear back or find their sites on the directory at all.
These are actually very common concerns among site owners and online marketers. DMOZ used to be a very important element of link building and site promotion once. Listing your site on this giant directory would not only ensure Google directory listing but also would ensure listing with lot of other individual search engines and web directories. It is a matter of great regret that DMOZ miserably failed to uphold its reputation and dignity as an important impartial web directory. If we analyze how the administration works around this directory, we see that the submissions people make are at the mercy of category editors.

These editors are not paid DMOZ employees but non-paid volunteers. Since one good way to ensure listing of a site is by being an editor at DMOZ for that selected category, lot of site owners familiar how DMOZ works end up signing up as DMOZ editors. There have been lot of abuses done by these volunteer editors and some are even known for extortions. A DMOZ editor once asked for a fat bribe from Shoe Money and threatened him that his site would be removed unless the editor didn’t get the money he demanded. Talking about bureaucracy!

Web 2.0 and social media sites opened the world of link building opportunity for which DMOZ directory submission which is so challenging is hardly being used by many site owners these days. There are ton of other individual directories out there also for which submitting to DMOZ is not a must anymore. In fact, lot of seasoned veterans think that it is nothing but a total waste of time even thinking about DMOZ directory submission as it has proven to be nothing but a wild goose chase for then for many years now. If you are putting together a link building campaign and were considering DMOZ directory submission, then it doesn’t really hurt to go ahead and submit. Submit and forget is however suggested. Move on to the next to do in your link building campaign and keep building back links accordingly.

How to suggest a site to the Open Directory

The Open Directory Project is a web directory of Internet resources. A web directory is something akin to a huge reference library. The directory is hierarchically arranged by subject - from broad to specific. The ODP is maintained by community editors who evaluate sites for inclusion in the directory. They are our experts, and all submissions are subject to editor evaluation.

We care a great deal about the quality of the ODP. We aren't a search engine and pride ourselves on being highly selective. We don't accept all sites, so please don't take it personally should your site not be accepted. Our goal is to make the directory as useful as possible for our users, not to have the directory include all (or even most) of the sites that could possibly be listed or serve as a promotional tool for the entities listed.

To keep the ODP running smoothly and to assist us in exercising our editorial discretion, we have set up policies for submitting sites for our consideration. We may reject, delete, or edit submissions that violate these policies or that we otherwise believe, in our sole discretion, should not be included in the directory. We may also reject, delete, or block other sites that we believe to be associated with a user who has violated these policies.

You should take a few moments to understand these policies and the steps to submit a site before you begin.  Failure to understand and follow these instructions generally will result in the rejection of a submission.
